Running with Goldfish and Gift Wrapping the Sea is the first production of the new cohort of trainees on the Magnet Theatre Fulltime Training Programme. The production has been created with director Brink Scholtz, with input from Magnet Theatre’s Jennie Reznek, the training programme’s regular teachers, and Ananda Fuchs.

Brink Scholtz says of Running with Goldfish and Gift Wrapping the Sea: “What parts of ourselves have we packed away? Where did we freeze, never to move again? And how is it that sometimes, out of the blue, we start to melt? So that we spill out of ourselves, onto others, and into places we didn’t want to be?”

The simple, practical problems of packing up and unpacking; of freezing and melting, are the starting points for this exploration of the wide-ranging experiences of a group of young South Africans. Physically inventive and sparkling with playful humour, running with goldfish and gift wrapping the sea is an honest and emotionally challenging enquiry into what it means to be human, and young, in this place, at this time.
