MAGNETÂ SOS: HELP US GET OUR YOUTH TO SHORE!
On the eve of Magnet Theatre’s 40th anniversary, we’re sending out an SOS.
Unexpected funding cuts in the latter half of the 2026 means we are struggling to finish our youth programmes for the year.
This impacts:
* Our Culture Gangs Progamme: 130 young people
* Flagship Full-Time Training and Job Creation Programme: 20 young artists
* Job Creation + Internships: Paid opportunities cut
* Skills teachers and staff: Hours reduced
Even after adjusting our programmes and  budgets, we’re still short of funds. We are not sinking. We’re just running out of juice to get to shore.
For 39 years Magnet has delivered excellence in youth development programmes and award winning new South African physical Theatre. We run the only non-fee-paying professional theatre training for Cape Town youth in the Western Cape. 94% of our graduates go into employment or tertiary education. We have pioneered theatre for under-7 year olds, tour townships yearly, and have toured productions to over 30 countries employing youth in often their first international exposure.
We need you. Any amount helps close the gap and keeps these talented youth in training, in work, and on stage. If you’ve ever believed in young people in this country and the power of theatre, now is the time to stand with us.
SIX causes to support
1.FOOD FUND:Â We hope to support our trainees in as healthy a way possible during the training. It costs us approximately R1000 per week for lunches for 20 trainees.
2. MOBILITY FUND – To get our trainees in to the building every day.
- 1 day for 1 trainee = R 100
- 1 week for 1 trainee = R 500
- 1 month for 1 trainee = R 2000
3. SKILLS TEACHERS – to be able to retain our excellent external skills teachers
- R2660 per week
4. GRADUATION FUND – Our 7th cohort of trainees will graduate at the end of November. Here you can donate to catering, gowns, and certificates.
- R1000 per trainee
5. HOME FUND – You can help us keep our Magnet Theatre home’s doors open by donating to our monthly rent.
- 1 week = R5000
6. TICKETS FOR TEENS – you can increase access for our participants to theatre in the city. Help us by buying reduced price tickets for Magnet’s and other shows.

Is there safe parking at Magnet Theatre?
Yes, there is a limited number of parking bays in our property and we employ a security guard for evening performances.
