Projects
The Magnet Theatre Youth Company is a new initiative developed in response to the need to create and facilitate:
- ‘decent jobs’ for emerging young actors
- new content for developing markets
- skills, experience and employment readiness for youth on the margins of the creative industries.
2023 saw the first Magnet Theatre youth Company employed professionally by The Baxter Theatre for 4 months.  The company of 11 actors – created and performed several productions including Surge and Hamba Nam Ndipheleke directed by a Magnet alumni Bulelani Mabutyani. Coming back to employment at Magnet Theatre in October they performed Oedipus at Colonus #aftersophocles at the KKNK festival (for which they were nominated for 2 awards). They then went on to performed THE FOUR a season of 4 self-created new works exploring own style, language and themes.  The highlight of the year for the MTYC 2023 was winning  Best Ensemble at the Fleur du Cap Awards in 2024 for their work in Oedipus at Colonus #aftersophocles directed by Mark Fleishman.
MTYC 2023: Azola Mkhabile, Buhle Stefane, Sipho Kalako, Thabo Mkenene, Kuhle Myathaza, Lindokuhle Melaphi, Mihlali Bele, Molupi Lepeli, Siphenathi Siqwayi, Wendy Mrali and Nosiphiwo Ndabeni.
In  July 2024 Magnet Theatre was again able to offer decent employment for 9 young actors for 6 months. Together they will create 2 new works including Glimmer directed by Roshina Ratnam, tour Mina Thina to the Northern Cape and deliver a Summer Season of all the Magnet Theatre productions created this year. The summer Season will also  including 4 new solo works developed by the 2024 Magnet Theatre Associates.
